ClimateGate in Context I

Op 19 november verscheen op het weblog The Air Vent een bericht: “Leaked FOIA files 62 mb of gold". Als een enorm aerosol effect, verspreide het nieuws van de gestolen CRU data zich over klimaat blogs. Het duurde uiteraard niet lang, voor de eerste berichten over Nederland dreven (Zapruder). Een week later word de mist dikker en dikker.

Gavin Schmidt op Realclimate zegt: De eerste link naar de data stond in een reactie op Climateaudit op 17 november 2009. De schrijver genaamd “ RC”, schreef in het topic: “Miracles and Strip Bark Standardization”, de boodschap “A miracle just happened“. Deze tekst linkte naar een zip bestand, die een hacker op de server van Realclimate had geplaatst. Deze hacker, wou op Realclimate een artikel erbij plaatsen, maar is daarin niet geslaagd.

De mist word nog dikker als blijkt dat zowel, Gavin Schimdt(Realclimate) en Steve McIntyre(Climateaudit), veelvuldig genoemd worden in de mails.

When the FOI requests began here, the FOI person said we had to abide by the requests. It took a couple of half hour sessions – one at a screen, to convince them otherwise showing them what CA was all about. Once they became aware of the types of people we were dealing with, everyone at UEA (in the registry and in the Environmental Sciences school – the head of school and a few others) became very supportive.

Gavin komt in meer dan 200 mails voor, en in combinatie met Realclimate (RC) vinden we deze mail van Michael Mann. Een uitnodiging aan Tim Osborn en Keith Briffa, om Realclimate te gebruiken hoe het hun goed lijkt.

put up the RC post. By now, you've probably read that nasty McIntyre
thing. Apparently, he violated the embargo on his website (I don't go
there personally, but so I'm informed).

Anyway, I wanted you guys to know that you're free to use RC in any way
you think would be helpful. Gavin and I are going to be careful about
what comments we screen through, and we'll be very careful to answer any
questions that come up to any extent we can. On the other hand, you
might want to visit the thread and post replies yourself. We can hold
comments up in the queue and contact you about whether or not you think
they should be screened through or not, and if so, any comments you'd
like us to include.

Als een donderslag door deze mistige hemel, komt BBC weerman Paul Hudson met het nieuws, dat hij de mails al sinds 12 oktober in bezit heeft.

ClimateGate is begonnen
De afgelopen week buitelden “klimaat sceptici” (nietszeggendwoord™) over elkaar, om moord en brand te schreeuwen. De media reageerde veelal bekoeld 2 3, Paar citaten uit verband gehaald. De politiek? Die hadden geen mooier moment kunnen kiezen voor de Struisvogel Playbackshow, en wat een schitterende finale hebben we gezien. De PVV tekende nog protest aan bij de jury, “Zij gebruikte geen officiële wedstrijd houding!”, aldus een gepikeerde De Mos. Het mocht allemaal niet baten, het nieuw Nederlands record staat op 10 cm boven de navel.
